If you're a plumber in the UK, you might reasonably ask: do I actually need a website in 2026?

Customers can find you through Google, Checkatrade, TrustATrader, Facebook, Yell and other platforms. You can collect reviews, receive enquiries and show your work without building a website yourself.

So why pay for one?

Because a directory profile can help people find you, while a website gives you somewhere to turn that attention into a customer.

Your Google profile isn't your business website

Google can put your business in front of someone searching for a plumber in their area, and that's valuable. But your Google profile is still a profile on someone else's platform.

The same applies to trade directories. Your listing might show your phone number, reviews, photographs and services, but you're still working within the structure, design and rules of that platform.

Your website is different. It is your own online space where you decide what customers see, how your services are presented and what you want them to do next.

A website gives potential customers somewhere to check you out

Imagine someone has found your plumbing business through Google. They see your name, a few reviews and a phone number, but before calling, they might want to know: are these people actually the right plumber for my job?

A website can answer that question.

They can see your services, the areas you cover, photographs of your work, customer testimonials, qualifications and more about the business. Instead of asking a potential customer to make a decision based on a small directory listing, your website gives them more information to work with.

And you don't necessarily need a massive website. For many local plumbers, a well-built website with clear information can do the job.

Your website can bring in customers from searches

This is one of the biggest reasons a website still matters in 2026.

A plumber doesn't only want to appear when someone searches their business name. They also want to be discoverable when someone searches for the service itself.

For example, someone might search for "emergency plumber in Bristol", "boiler repair in Bristol", "blocked drain plumber near me" or "bathroom plumber in Bath".

A website gives you somewhere to create useful pages around the services and locations your business actually covers.

It doesn't guarantee that you'll rank for those searches. SEO takes time and there is competition. But without a website, you have far fewer opportunities to build your own search presence around those services.

You aren't completely dependent on directories

Trade platforms can be useful sources of enquiries, but relying entirely on them means a significant part of your online presence lives on platforms you don't control.

Your website gives you another channel.

If a directory changes its pricing, rules, visibility or how it displays businesses, your website remains yours. That doesn't mean you should abandon directories. It means your website and those platforms can work together.

Someone might discover you on a directory, search your business name afterwards and visit your website before deciding to call.

Your website can make you look established

People don't necessarily expect a plumber to have a flashy website. They do expect to be able to find basic information about the business.

A clean website with real photographs, clear services, genuine reviews and straightforward contact details can reinforce the impression that the business is established and serious.

Your website doesn't replace good workmanship. It helps communicate it.

It can save you from answering the same questions repeatedly

A good website can answer common questions before a customer contacts you.

Do you cover my area? Do you handle emergency callouts? Do you repair boilers? Do you work on weekends? Do you provide quotes? What types of plumbing work do you handle?

Instead of explaining everything from scratch over the phone or WhatsApp, customers can get some of that information themselves.

Your website becomes a useful business tool rather than just an online brochure.

The real question isn't "Do plumbers need websites?"

The better question is: would a website help my plumbing business get found, build trust and generate more enquiries?

For some plumbers, their existing referrals and online channels may already be enough. For others, particularly businesses trying to grow their local presence, a website can become an important part of how customers discover and evaluate them.

The website itself isn't the magic. What matters is what the website does.

It should help someone go from "I need a plumber" to "This looks like the plumber I should contact."

What should a plumber actually spend on a website?

You don't necessarily need a £5,000 agency website. You also don't need a five-page template that looks identical to every other trade business.

You need something that works.

It should load quickly, look professional on a phone, explain what you do, target the areas you actually serve, make contacting you easy and give customers a reason to trust you.

Then it needs to be maintained. Because a website that was built three years ago and forgotten about isn't doing much for your business today.

So, do plumbers still need websites in 2026?

A website can still be a valuable part of a plumbing business's online presence in 2026, but it shouldn't exist just because "every business needs a website."

It should have a job. It should help you get discovered, help customers trust you, answer their questions and ultimately help turn people looking for a plumber into enquiries.

That's what we believe a trade website should do at Sitefolk.

You focus on the plumbing. We take care of the website.
